4 November 2021
Dear Friends of St Paul’s
Our academic year is very quickly ending, and it will certainly be yet another that won't fade away from our memories very quickly! If 2021 was the Year of COVID-19 the 2021 at St Paul’s has been the year of significant change.
As we all know, we have had an interrupted year in terms of our physical environment. The building work while certainly starting to look amazing has caused much disruption to all aspects of our college life. To the credit of the students and staff we have continued to work together to ensure our learning programs have been maintained and all the extra activities that we run, external to the classrooms, have also continued wherever humanly possible. Hopefully the year 12 exams and their results will be a just reward for their diligence and great resilience.
One such was the Year 9 Rite of Passage last Friday. This afternoon and evening centres around the stage of life where young boys start to acknowledge that they are entering the process of becoming a man and as such need to take on more responsibility for all aspects of their life. To have fathers and male role models involved in this program is wonderful and it was very successful. We sincerely thank Ms Angela Collins and all the staff who gave willing of their time in both teaching the course associated with this, as well as the staff who helped make the evening so successful.
We have also held two separate transition days for our first ever co-educational Reception classes and two new parent information nights. All have likewise been very well attended and very successful.
Over recent weeks, we have communicated to you the names of several new staff members that are joining our community in 2022. In this context I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the staff who continue to serve our beautiful community and to those who have been here for many years.
One of these Dr Paul Kemp has been with us for 30 years. At the Year 12 Graduation Mass we presented Paul with a certificate of service for his 30 year contribution to St Paul’s and we acknowledge all the great work he had done with and for the hundreds of students that he has nurtured and taught during that time. Well done Dr Kemp!
Next Friday we will hold our broader transition day for all new students from reception through to Year 8. This will be a tremendous opportunity to both meet them collectively, for them to meet their teachers and for us to help them establish new friendships and become more familiar with the surroundings (albeit they will look a lot different by next January).
We look forward to other celebratory events that are still to come and encourage the students to continue to make the most of their few remaining weeks.
Take care
God Bless
Mr Paul Belton
Dear Friends of St Paul’s,
It is with much pleasure that we inform our extended St Paul’s community the names of the Student Leadership Group (Prefects) for 2022.
In doing so, I thank Nick Callary and the Leaders of House for their work with this process.
These young men have a very important role in 2002 as we enter a whole new chapter of life at the College as a co-educational school.

UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE AND ADELAIDE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM
On Thursday, October 28, our Year 11 Modern History students went on an excursion to the University of Adelaide and the Adelaide Holocaust Museum and Andrew Steiner Centre. They participated in workshops run exclusively for them by Historian Dr Paul Sendziuk at the University. They then visited Adelaide Holocaust Museum, where they toured the exhibitions and were able to hear from and ask questions to, Holocaust survivor Andrew Steiner, OAM. Students found the sessions interesting, moving and informative. Presenters were very impressed with the attention and engagement of our students throughout the day.
We thank Dr Sendziuk and Mr Steiner for their time and valuable insights into our learning in Modern History.
Some reflections from our students are provided below:
Dr Sendzuik gave us a taste of what lectures at universities are like and this was a great opportunity to learn what to expect at University. Additionally, he raised some important points about the importance and relevance of studying history. I found this very interesting and overall, it was a great experience.
The Holocaust Museum was a good learning experience as well. The array of pictures was useful at getting a visual understanding of the conditions during the Holocaust. Also, both educators from the museum were friendly and very insightful. Justin James (11DA5)
I felt that the excursion was a really interesting experience overall. The lecture - which was about Australian life during WW2 - at the university was a good insight into what life at university in general is like.
The Holocaust Museum was also a sobering, but interesting experience. Having tours through the Anne Frank exhibition, as well as the permanent exhibition was very informative and I felt I learnt a lot about the Holocaust, despite learning about it this year.
Overall, the excursion was an enjoyable experience and a great chance to learn more about university life and gain further information about the Holocaust. Allan Riley (11MA4)
Yesterday's visit to the University of Adelaide and the Holocaust Museum was a great opportunity for Year 11 Modern History students to immerse themselves in a unique learning experience which granted us the ability to exercise our critical thinking, reflect on past events, engage respectfully in thought-provoking activities and gain an insight as to what the future years of education (tertiary) may entail Ryan Du (MA6)
I had the pleasure of travelling to the University of Adelaide and the Holocaust Museum. With us travelling to both the Uni Hub and the Napier Building of the University, we experienced a once in a lifetime lecture from Dr Paul Sendziuk. Paul is an expert in South Australian history and diseases and with this, he gave a presentation discussing the features of learning history at a Uni-level. After giving us an additional lecture on WWII experiences, we travelled to the Adelaide Holocaust Museum. Being guided through the experiences of both Anne Frank and Jews as a whole was a really rewarding experience, and allowed me to grasp a concept of exactly what they lived through. In addition, we also received an interview with Andrew Steiner (the creator of the museum), and he gave us his experiences of the war. To see him explain these first-hand is a true honour and I was privileged to hear these. Overall, it was an amazing experience and it benefitted me more than words can express. Oscar Burrows (11GL4)

2022 ‘Little Eddies’
Our 2022 Receptions have now enjoyed two transition days at St Paul’s College. The excitement that comes with starting at school seems to be contagious, with many of our staff and new families already planning and sharing ideas for what 2022 will look like.
Our new receptions have brought excitement, big smiles and confidence! Children have been participating in activities and experiences that will support their readiness to start school in 2022. Activities based around developing their motor skills and starting to learn the first concepts for pre-reading, writing and numeracy. Inclusive of visits to the playground and establishing new friendships, and meeting teachers.
We look forward to our Transition Day next Friday, 12th, where all new students will come together for the first time to meet their teachers and peers in their class for 2022.
Primary Quad
I am seeking your support regarding the current guidelines about families entering the Primary Quad area in the mornings and afternoons. We still require all families to wait outside the glass gates each day. The only exception to this is if you have a scheduled meeting with a teacher/staff member. If you have a scheduled meeting, I ask that you scan the QR code before entering the space.
Children’s University
On the 10th of November, we will see 15 of our Primary students graduate from Children’s University. These students have participated in activities and learning outside of school hours over the last few terms. The University of Adelaide will formally recognise them in a graduation ceremony held at Bonython Hall. I strongly encourage more families to participate in the event next year. Please come and see me if you are interested in 2022.
Grandparents' Liturgy
Tomorrow we celebrate our Grandparents with a Primary Liturgy. As parents, we’ve all heard about the importance of positive parent-child relationships in children's social and emotional development. There are countless research studies and supporting statistics that highlight the many benefits of strong parent-child bonds. However, what isn’t always recognised is the positive impact that a close relationship between a grandparent and grandchild can have on the happiness and well-being of the entire family.
Grandparents are a valuable resource because they have so many stories and experiences from their own lives to share. Often, children will listen to grandparents even when they are not listening to their parents or other adults. Grandparents also offer a link to a child's cultural heritage and family history. Children understand more of who they are and where they come from through their connection with their grandparents.

Child protection and safeguarding is the responsibility of all members of our community to ensure that young people are safe, included, healthy and happy.
As educators…our staff, as well as contractors and volunteers, undertake site-specific training, as well as training directed by Catholic Education South Australia and Edmund Rice Education Australia. We are mandated to report any concerns about child safety and want all members of our community to proactively inform us of any safeguarding concerns.
As students…our young people are regularly engaging with the mandated Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum, most obviously identifying at least one adult they can trust as a crucial first step to keeping themselves and others safe. Giving students voice and helping them identify risks is another important part of our commitment to Child Protection.
As members of St Paul’s broader community…please discuss any concerns around child protection and safeguarding with a staff member or with me, our College Child Protection Officer, to ensure that you are part of our community’s commitment to keeping young people safe.
For any specifics, the St Paul’s College Child Protection Policy is a great reference point: HERE
As our governing body, the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) child protection policy is another great resource: HERE
Fortunate for the support of EREA, and our College’s commitment to their Safeguarding Framework, members of our community are also urged to familiarise themselves with the following EREA Safeguarding Website: HERE
Together and with a diligent commitment to child protection and safeguarding, our College community will meet our joined expectation to keep all young people safe.
