Respectful Relationships Presentation Yr 10-12

Date: 18 August 2021 - 18 August 2021

Please note: the parent session has been CANCELLED due to low numbers. The student sessions are still proceeding during the school day.

Young people are not satisfied with school based sex education, citing it as simplistic, risk focused, sex negative, and irrelevant. Instead, young people have voiced their preference for practical information about navigating respectful intimate relationships.

Dr Tessa Opie, founder of in your skin®, is dedicated to exploring these matters from a positive and pragmatic perspective. Specifically, in your skin® aims to empower young people to:

  • develop healthy relationship skills
  • identify personal values and relationships needs
  • determine boundaries around preferred sexual activity
  • communicate and negotiate sexual activity
  • understand and identify coercion
  • understand, express, and recognise consent
  • enjoy healthy, consenting, and egalitarian relationships

In 2018, Tessa co-published a national position paper, as lead author, detailing comprehensive, evidence-based sexuality and relationships education in Australian schools. She has also recently published a paper which considers the role of sex-positive education in the prevention of sexual assault among high school students. In 2019, Tessa worked as a consultant for a 4-part SBS series, The Hunting.

This year, Tessa has been involved in the 2021 National Health and Physical Education Curriculum Leaders Forum, presenting her work on sexual health and safety in the context of consent education.
